Thanks Dave1899. That is a nice little summary.

Also, rule 9:

"Help Internet Newbies

Be patient and helpful with others. Remember, everyone was a newbie once."

So that is the other edge of the sword, so to speak. My face has been glued to the internet (when it wasn't up to a scope, or looking down a shotgun or arrow) for the last 15 years, making me a relative newbie. Some folks think the web is kinda like a teletype or just plain suck at typing. The intent is OK, only the effect is rude as perceived by others.

I still think the English language is really interesting and the rules and conventions are how we convey feeling along with meaning. Caplockers lose a chance to convey emphasis and emotion, and are perceived as rude by others, even if they don't intend it.A short kind word offline might help, or not, and they are free to choose, of course. People can drive 55 in the fast lane, too. We have to let them live as well.

I also associate the decay of English usageand spelling with the decline of the West, but if I feel strongly enough I will post an essay on that in its own thread. It's just a little thing. Mandarin (Simplified)won't have upper and lower case.

So much of it is, indeed, "netiquette." It is just the communications protocols that folks that use the internet, in all its guises, as a means to communicate have become accustomed to. I find it in poor form to to avoid all attempts at punctuation and shifting from upper to lower case. I also find it in equally poor form to vehemently admonish someone in a public forum for a minor breech of grammar or lexical errors. ( I am certainly guilty of many errors.)

I have always taken it for granted that folks should exhibit some pride in their command of their native language. I'm an extremely poor typist, self taught and it shows. I do, however, make a reasonable effort to consider how I express myself and take the time to do a cursory proof read of what I have fumbled on to the screen. This is even more depressing when you consider that I make my living sitting behind a keyboard and screen for much of my day.

When folks consistently just blurt out something in a post, and obviously have not taken any time to consider what they are expressing, or how what they are saying may impact others or how others may perceive them, I begin to loose interest in what they may post next. This may come off as a bit of internet snobbery, but I have input to consider from so many sources that I have to filter what I invest my time in.

I agree with the suggestion that folks who read a great deal are more comfortable with reading in a conventional format. It is just easier to read something that has been typed as I might expect it to be written in print.

Typing in all caps don't bother me at all.

I just skip over the post that has all caps and move on to the next one.

Not worth the aggravation.

But why would it be aggravating?  Isn't it the content and not so much the medium that is important?  Who made up these internet protocols?  That's a nice list - that someone else drew up.  Personally, I could care less if a post is in all caps.  Shouting hurts my ears, but all caps doesn't hurt my eyes.  Anyway, was just one of those things I see from time to time.  Better to say " No dumb posts!"  Er, that may apply to this one, come to think of it.....

I only use CAP's when I want to express something of vital importance,...and usually when cautionning a fellow member of doing something that may be dangerous to the weapon,..themselves,..or anyone around them. About the only 'shouting' I do around here is when I accidentally hit that damn Cap Lock key without looking at the screen and end up with half a response in all caps!!!! Duh!!!! tjk

Red,I agree with you 100%,if the same person/s decided that dotting your lower-case i was like giving someone the finger, there would be those that would actually believe that someone disrespected them by dotting a lower-case i..... :p  The only thing that bothers me is when someone becomes offensive to whomever the individual is that is using all caps & doing so on an open forum,I have seen it done to others as well as myself,I believe that the individual openly correcting those that may lack the internet experience is the same person that never got picked as a kid in a choose-up game of football, baseball, etc. &  wouldn't know how to change a flat tire!!!! :o  I guess I'm a little sarcastic but I also am a care-taker for the underdog! :)
