Bidding Surprise
« on: September 06, 2009, 04:44:14 AM »
Was poking around on ebay yesterday and saw a Leupold VX-1 3-9x40 going for far too little brand new, so I put in a bid. As I wasn't looking for a scope, I was at least $50 off a discount price and $110 off MSRP. Short of it: I won. Now the delemma. I have 5 rifles I use (actually 4 and one on the way) and some nice scopes in a range. In fact as I was just upgrading all my scopes and getting ready to sell some used ones, I have a bunch of scopes to choose from. Now I have to figure out which rifle to match with which scope! I'm interested in suggestions. Here are the lists:

TF89 (Gene Tuned)
TF87 & gasram (new, on the way)
Remington Vantage 1200
TF97
Daisy 953

Nikon Monarch 4-16x42 SF AO
Leupold VX-1 3-9x40
Sightron SII 3-12x42
Millet Gold Buck 4-16x56 SF AO
TASCO Silver Antler 3-9x40
BSA 36x44 Target Scope
Bushnell Banner 3-9x40 (2) AO
Bushnell 8-32x56 AO
TF 2-7x32 AO
Centerpoint AR22 4x32

I want to use those first 4 scopes. I mostly target shoot/plink between 10-20 yards with occasional pest control at a longer range. I like nice glass as I spend some time doing photography, and visual matters to me.

I have my ideas..but which would you mount to what? Also, I have a TF89 coming in for my brother for his birthday, and one of the leftovers is going on that before I send it. Which would you choose?

Thanks for any input.

The first three scopes on your list are all good ones ...... but I wonder if they are springer rated ? They're kinda expensive glass to risk, if not sure.

I love my Sightron SII 4-16, but I'd never put it on a springer to see if it'd hold up. I can buy at least four Leapers for what it would cost me to replace my Sightron.

Gee, didn't consider they might not be good for springers. Where might I find that out?!

watch out for those cheap ebay Leupolds. Lots of Asian counterfeits and fakes have been sold to unsuspecting bidders. They look good but you find out the hard way when it comes time for warranty work.

how would one tell if you had a counterfeit Leupold?   If you could identify one off ebay as counterfeit it would not be that big a deal to return unless the seller did not want to do any more ebay business.   ebay frowns on frauds.  John

I saw a vendor who was selling fake Bushnell scopes get canned from ebay. It should be easy enough to validate with leupold.

Interesting...the swirl is getting deeper. That specifically mentions Leupold, Burris and Bushnell as having all scopes air-rifle friendly, but does not list Nikon, Millett or Sightron.

You'd think that the importance of this type of info would leave manufacturers to list that, as well as minimum focusing distance. I can't be the only one interested in that type of info!

Nikon's warrantee seems to suggest it doesn't matter what rifle you put something on... "At Nikon, we believe the best warranty is one you’ll never have to use. For this reason, we crafted the Nikon Lifetime Full Warranty, which provides confidence on those rare occasions when something goes wrong. If any Nikon riflescope is found to have defects in workmanship or materials, we will, at our option, repair or replace it at no charge, even if you are not the original owner. No time limit applies and no warranty card is required." I still sent them a note asking specifically about use on air rifles. I'll have to do the same with Sightron and Millett...

bookdoc,

I've  had  a Sightron 6-24 AO on my .223 for about 8 years now and love it. Thinking of getting another in 3-12 AO, so I'd update this thread with what I just found out.

I just had a nice talk this morning with a tech at Sightron in NC.

Yes, all their scopes will hold up to springer use. Even lists air rifles as one of the recommended uses in their site info. He said they have two springers there they have tested with.

When I specifically asked about it, he said using any of their scopes on a springer will not void Sightron's  life-time warrentee. He added that if a Sightron breaks, just send it to them and they will take care of it.

He said the only limitation is their non-AO scopes are set parralex free at 100 yards. For close  shots with airguns he said the image will most likely be a bit blurry.  However, he recommends using any of their many models of front, or side AO scopes, which will focus down to 10 yards.

Think I'll try my Sightron 6-24 on the Whisper and see what differance it makes.

Still pretty new to this hobby so haven't really tried out different brands of scopes.....but I've read that Bushnell scopes are all rated for airguns. Also no registration card is necessary (Guess that means if someone bought an old one....and it broke...they can send it in for repairs or an exchange) andunlimited lifetime guarantee. Just send them a check of $10.00 for shipping and handling.

One of my Bushnell Banner's went south on me with only 700+ shots.....sent it back to them and got a brand new one.....but it took 7 weeks total. Guess they had to check it...see if it's repairable and what-not. Read somewhere that Leapers or some other brand's service is quite abit faster....2 weeks. But their scope was alot more expensive.

Millet is not mentioned as I think its a newish company, I spoke to there tech department before mounting one on my RWS34  and so far doing great:) Tony

I spoke to customer service at Bushnell who now owns Millett, and they suggested the Millett scopes are not springer rated...which is too bad as I had one and liked it a LOT. I hope they decide to adjust some of the manufacturing process to support heavy/springer recoil!
