Well put Richard, you must do your homework to try to get he most bang for your buck. It's hard because $$$ dont always = better. I'm having a hard time believing a tune makes all that much difference, but I admit I am ignorant as  I have never shot the difference first hand. Feel free to chime in on that. It would be nice to go to a meet to be able to try others guns. I know, because I could only afford one gun right now, I am am very happy with my NPSS .22. But it was a struggle to decide because I had to educate myself on this sight and pick what I felt was right for all of my needs. I wish I could afford a pcp, but.....

I think it may depend on who does the tune... but my first tuned gun went from not even working to wow.  the spring was replaced along with other parts, the trigger tuned and a custom guide was made. Reducd twng, torque and made shooting a lot more accurate with less recoil. A $134 gun with a $150 tune...$284, still less than my RWS, more accurate and smoother with a better trigger feel. I'm not saying the RWS is a piece of junk...I'm just wondering what the real advantage is to spending more.

It is really hard to go by other people's opinions, which is why I bought the RWS...I was planning to put about $1000 into another TF89 to customize, and I wanted to be sure I was starting with the right base. It was worth the investment and I'm not throwing the RWS away ;-) I just wanted to feel a LOT more difference for more than twice the price.

quantity vs. quality...?....i have slimmed down my quantity of guns to rws-54, beeman rx-2, theoben eliminator, and a disco for my granddaughter.  the 54 will always be one of my favorites.  the rx-2 is a very nice "fit & finish" gun but has been sold to someone in the "low-country" and is/was a fantastic shooter (20 fpe), the theoben goes without comment....it is handmade and you can't really compare it to mass-produced airguns, and then there is the little disco.....the fit and finish on the disco is adequate but nothing to show-off unless you have a "meredith" custom stock on it but it is fun trying to see how much ummph you can get out of it.  power adjusters, high-rise blocks, barrel shrouds, funky muzzle-brakes, special bolts,  and all the inexpensive mods you can do to it.  the disco is a FUN tinker-toy.  the theoben rules the roost and then the rws-54.
The hardest part of getting old is trying to look good naked!

Let me know where you got a RWS 350 magnum for $250... I got my last TF89 for $119, and most places sell the RWS350 for $399. Are you sure you are talking about the right gun?

You "won't" own a TF89...but why? Seems to me like you are pretty closed minded and like to retain a sense that you know better.

You say that like every chinese springer is exactly the same. I suppose every German springer is exactly the same? That's an arguement that makes no sense. The $35 Chinese springer on Amazon is not the same as a TF89. Learn about what you think you are talking about. I did.

Whew.
Well this thread just shows that with airguns like everything else - "it's different strokes for different folks".
I fall into the into the quantity group. I'm more curious about how well the "cheap" guns perform for the money. A $300-400 dollar AIRGUN better be dang good or I'd be very unhappy.
For example, I picked up my Turkish "POS" Winchester 1000 at Walmart at a clearance price of about 80 bucks. It's a very accurate rifle and probably the hardest hitting. Maybe its innards fall short of the quality some expect. But to me it's just a great shooting rifle. I just got the airgun bug this past year. It actually started when I cleaned out the attic and dug out my old B3. Started plinking in the basement. Did some searching on the web. Found a video of the Drozd Blackbird full-auto and had to have one. That's been my most expensive gun at $300. For sheer fun it was worth every penny. My next "big" purchase was the Beeman RS2 dual-caliber at Wally World for $120. Another fine gun for the money IMO. I could go on about all my Chinese bargains. There's not one that I was unhappy with. They are all surprisingly accurate for the money. Of course some are a little rougher than others.
Let's face it, for us plinkers at the ranges we shoot these things there is not a giant difference in accuracy in a lot of these guns. If you are a serious competition shooter, then yes it's a different ballgame.
I'm just having fun blasting stuff and trying to keep the holes touching. Hmm, that $69 Walther refurb sounds like a good deal...;-)

Just to detour this a little... I asked earlier what anyone means by 'quality'. I mean, is it fps, trigger, accuracy, feel, handling, performance, etc.? And if 'performance' based, do you measure by what pellet you are using at all, altitude, weather, shooting experience? I think there are a lot of variables here that may not be being discussed.

Stanley,

I know you use the metric system up there in Canada but you say all you need are 4 yet you obviously have at least a dozen! LOL  Kind of like my wife celebrating the anniversary of her 29th birthday!  YOU ARE IN DENIAL MY FRIEND!  There is no way you are going to limit yourself to 4 rifles!
